Slight increase in unemployment

The National Statistics Office showed that in June, the number of persons registering as unemployed stood at 7,279, up from 6,697 over the corresponding month last year, and marginally down over May. A year-on-year increase of 578 persons was recorded in registrants whose duration of unemployment exceeded one year. On the other hand, unemployed persons who had been on the register for less than 21 weeks decreased by 131, or 4.6 per cent. The registered unemployment rate in February stood at 4.5 per cent of the labour supply, and varied from 5.3 per cent for men to 3.0 per cent for women. The registered unemployment rate for persons under 25 stood at 5.3 per cent, while for those aged 45 and over it stood at 5.1 per cent. The long-term unemployment rate stood at 1.7 per cent
