According to the recently published statistics, the National Statistics Office found that between 2004 and 2012 the number of workers who retired from work prior reaching pensionable age because of invalidity was halved. Those receiving invalidity pension dropped to 4,945 in 2012 from 9,313 eight years earlier. This led to a significant expenditure drop on invalidity pensions from €35.8 million to €24.6 million during the period under review. The drop came about after a strong campaign to stamp benefit fraud was launched, which included stricter checks on persons applying for an invalidity pension. In Gozo boarded out individuals accounted for 2.5% while in Malta this accounted for 1 per cent of the population.
